HEALTH minister Dr Joseph Kasonde says food security is one of the challenges that the country is facing. Speaking at the ongoing universal exposition which ends in October in Milan, Italy, Dr Kasonde, who headed the Zambian delegation, which includes commerce deputy minister minister Miles Sampa, said food security was a global problem that needed global responses.
He said there was need for sound agricultural policies to deal with food wastage. “Food security is one of the major challenges as 800 million people worldwide suffer nutrition problems. This is a global problem deserving global responses. In this perspective, we need investments in agricultural infrastructure, we also need sound agricultural policies dealing with the problem of food waste.
We need as well to fight against poverty in rural areas,” said Dr Kasonde. And Italian deputy minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation Benedetto Della Vedova said Africa’s contribution to the 2015 exposition was overwhelming. “Expo Milan 2015 is a very suitable place for dealing with cooperation and with agro-industry policies and Africa’s contribution to the exhibition is overwhelming: 40 delegations from the African continent are attending the Expo,” he said.
“The production of fruits and vegetable represent a very promising area for building a sustainable partnership with Italy, together with other sectors like energy, environment, infrastructures and transportation, as well as agro-industry.” Senator Della Vedova acknowledged the political stability and the economic growth of Zambia, which he said represented one of the best partners for Italy in the sub-Saharan region to be considered within the Italian governmental initiative dedicated to Africa.
Zambia Development Agency director general Patrick Chisanga said Zambia’s geo-strategic position between South Africa and Kenya and its membership to SADC and COMESA gave the country an enlarged area of consumers. The Wegh Group and Enoch Kavindele’s North West Rail Limited also signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the railway sector at the end of the business forum.
