How a Big Wave Surfer is using Sheep to Fight Ocean Pollution

Corona Studios’ new film, ‘Tides of Wool’, premieres at the World Surf League 2023 Championship Tour in Jeffreys Bay, uniting worlds of surfing, farming, and recycling.

Corona Studios premiered its third locally produced film, Tides of Wool, on the picturesque shores of Jeffrey’s Bay in the Eastern Cape on Friday. The event coincided with the World Surf League 2023 Championship Tour, which is currently taking place at the renowned South African surf destination.

Known as The Corona Open J-Bay, the competition is the ninth stop on the world tour itinerary and follows the sunset to Jeffrey’s Bay until July 22.

The compelling short film, Tide of Wool tells the story of sheep farmer and big wave surfer, Jurie Muller, who reimagines the surfboard on his journey to fighting the scourge of ocean pollution and, in doing so, uniquely combines three worlds into the creation of one surfboard: surfing, farming, and recycling.

In Tides of Wool, Jurie shares his story about the moment he was inspired to create a surfboard made from upcycled ocean waste and locally sourced organic material, including sheep’s wool.

“I’d just chased my first big swell at Dungeons (off Cape Town) in 2008 and scored my first barrel on 25-foot wave when it struck me that I wanted to hand-shape my own boards. But I wanted to write my own narrative on it, drawing attention to how pollution is impacting the ocean and the environment in general,” says Jurie, who was born, raised and lives on a farm in Vleesbaai on the Garden Route in the Southern Cape.

His surfboard brand, Gonzo, was born in 2010 (in an old chicken shed on the farm) and since then, Jurie has been facing big waves on his own handcrafted boards whilst taking custom orders.

“For me what’s significant is how much passion and skill Jurie brings to the sport while showing you can live your best life without compromising the planet. The film was a joy to make and a body of work which I believe has real impact,” says Tides of Wool filmmaker Johann De Klerk from Team Sunday films.
