Immerse yourself

Immerse yourself in a landscape where wildlife and flora leave you truly captivated and transformed. Sanbona is one of South Africa’s largest privately-owned nature reserves, stretching across 58 000 Hectares of rich protected ecosystems within two biodiversity hotspots.

This vast track of land in the Little Karoo outside Montagu, a mere 3.5 hours drive from Cape Town along Route 62, is owned by a non-profit company focused on steering conservation to the forefront of the safari experience.

Sanbona offers an authentic and contrasting natural space, striving to create a balance where critically important ecosystems, endangered wildlife and flora can prosper for the benefit of future generations. Spend the day exploring every corner of this immense reserve, endless open plains and sculpted Cape fold mountains adorned with San rock art, the endemic flora and some of South Africa’s most sought-after wildlife.

Sanbona offers four different accommodation options, each with their own distinctive style and appeal:

  • Dwyka Tented Lodge is beautifully tucked away under some nesting Verreaux’s eagles and in the bend of the dried up Bobbejaanskrans River, offering a truly a unique wilderness experience. Very organic and opulent in design, each tent is individually spaced offering complete privacy.
  • Gondwana Family Lodge emulates a traditional thatched Karoo homestead with beautiful views over the Bellair Dam and Anysberg mountain range.
  • The original manor house, Tilney Manor is a refuge of peace and tranquility with breath taking views of the undulating mountains and wilderness from a private balcony.
  • Our Seasonal Explorer Camp, which is located in a beautifully shaded riverbed and offers guests an authentic walking safari experience to explore the Karoo while sleeping in luxury tents and enjoying evenings around a campfire. The camp operates during the summer months, with a minimum stay of two nights and a set departure each Friday.
