As we piece together the life puzzle of Mr Nelson Mandela, we realise the importance of the people and places he touched with his hope and courage. The Drakenstein Correctional Facility is one of these places and we are working hard at making it part of The Madiba Journey. Why, you may ask? Well here is a short history lesson on how important this facility was in the life on Madiba. The Drakenstein Correctional Centre, was formly known as Victor Verster Prsion and is currently an unofficial attraction linked to life and times of Nelson Mandela. The centre is located in the Western Cape, between Paarl andFranschhoek in the Cape Winelands. It was here, in a house on the property, that Nelson Mandel aspent 14 months of his 27 year improsonment – this was the last stop on his iconic long walk to freedom..
February 11th, 2016 marks the 26th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s historic release from Victor Verster Prison (now the Drakenstein Correctional Facility) and the walk to Freedom after 27 years of incarceration. To commemorate the event, the Drakenstein Correctional Services and the Cape Winelands District Municipality hosted the 27 for Freedom Race day at the Drakenstein Correctional Facility. There was a 27km run (symbolic of the number of years spent in jail by the former president), a less serious fun run (10km) or you could do the Freedom Route (5km). The run took you along the same route that was taken by Madiba as he left prison, from the Madiba House, along the Long Walk to Freedom, to the Madiba Statue at the entrance of the correctional facility. Not only a fun run but a symbolic day of remeberance of hope, freedom and courage.
Our Minister of finance, Mr Derek Hanekom even joined in the fun and finished the ten kilometer run in no time. Minister of Tourism, along with South African Tourism, is working hard at finding a way to let visitors experience the house where Nelson Mandela spent 14 months. Currently access to the house is restricted, yet it will hopefully become an official part the Madiba Journey for all to appreciate.
