Women Helping to Drive the Construction of Nordex Wind Farms

In celebration of Women’s Month, Nordex Energy South Africa is proud to recognise the women helping to drive the construction of their wind farms. At the company’s custom-built concrete tower manufacturing facility in Jeffreys Bay, ten women—representing 40% of the Nordex site team—have played a key role in overseeing the manufacturing of all 1,425 keystones required for a cluster of wind farms near the Impofu Dam in the Eastern Cape.

Led by Site Manager Sphila Maphumulo, the women on the Nordex team have contributed significantly to this milestone, ensuring the project remains on track while also championing greater gender representation in the renewable energy sector.

“It’s a privilege to lead this team and be part of building a more inclusive and sustainable energy future,” says Maphumulo. “We are proud to show that women have a central role to play in this sector—both on the ground and in leadership.”

At peak, the factory supported more than 400 jobs—most filled by local workers—further contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.

This achievement reflects not only technical excellence and strong project delivery but also the value of diversity and transformation in powering South Africa’s clean energy future.

“With women making up an estimated 10% to 14% of the country’s construction workforce, it’s clear that we still have work to do – in both the construction and energy sector. At Nordex, we are committed to actively driving equality by creating real opportunities for women to lead, grow, and thrive—particularly in technical and leadership roles. The success of our team at the Eastern Cape facility is a strong example of what’s possible when inclusion is prioritised and supported,” concluded Robert Timmers, Managing Director, Nordex Energy South Africa.
