To mark World Bee Day on 20 May, the Western Cape Bee Industry Association would like to offer the media the opportunity to publish a photograph of our prized indigenous honey bee, the Cape honey bee, Apis mellifera capensis.
The photograph was the winning entry in a photographic competition earlier this year organised by the Western Cape Bee Industry Association, and was taken by one of our members, Mike Metcalfe. The stunning image shows a Cape honey bee, laden with pollen, foraging on a water-lily.
World Bee Day was declared by the United Nations to help raise awareness of the crucial role honey bees and other pollinators play in our ecosystem.
If the image is used, please credit the photographer, Mike Metcalfe and the WCBA.
