The Hyundai Motor Group showcased its hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck at the H2 Mobility and Energy Show 2020 in Korea. The showcase first took place on 1 July and will end on 3 July 2020. The HDC-6 Neptune Concept, a hydrogen-powered Class 8 heavy-duty truck has a mobile fuel cell generator and a scale model of its smart mobility ecosystem was displayed at the showcase.
This was the first H2 Mobility and Energy Show and it aimed to provide a thorough look into the global hydrogen industry ecosystem, from hydrogen production and storage to transportation and mobility. It marked the Korean premiere of the HDC-6 Neptune concept. It was initially showcased at the North American Commercial Vehicle Show in October 2019.
The HDC-6 Neptune concept has embodied Hyundai’s plans for a zero-carbon emission fuel cell truck and is leading the paradigm shift to eco-friendly commercial vehicles in the industry.
The New York iconic streamliner railway trains from the 1930s era were one of the key inspirational designs for the HDC-6 Neptune. The design makes use of a solid structure with a smooth and rounded front design to create an entirely unique frame for the hydrogen-powered electric truck. Hyundai plans to launch this concept by developing an enhanced fuel cell system with high durability and power, optimized for heavy-duty trucks within the next three to four years
“The HDC-6 NEPTUNE will lead the transition into an eco-friendly commercial vehicle era,” Hyundai said.
Hyundai also presented its mobile fuel generator which could in future be used in various industries. It utilizes two fuel cell stacks also used in NEXO, the world’s first dedicated fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), generating a maximum output of 160 kW. This amount of power allows the generator to be used in various capacities such as charging two electric busses or trucks simultaneously. The mobile fuel generator is developing as a possible clean alternative to diesel generators.
The company also exhibited a 1:8-scale model of its smart mobility ecosystem with Urban Air Mobility (UAM), Purpose Built Vehicles (PBV) andHub (Mobility Transit Base) that was first seen at CES 2020. The scale model was a miniature that demonstrated Hyundai’s vision of a future mobility ecosystem where UAM, PBV and Hub are integrated by design.
Hyundai Motor has plans to incorporate the fuel cell system into the smart mobility ecosystem, particularly for UAMs. The company’s team will be working to reduce the weight of the fuel cell system while increasing the power output to be used in the mobility solution. This would allow fuel cell systems to be used in trains and ships going beyond commercial and passenger vehicles.
